As a recreational diving instructor, I can tell you that when I have a group of non-certified open water students underwater on their training dives, I am diving alone. Who's going to help me if I have a problem ?? One of the students ?? Not a chance in hell. OK, I've said my piece. Flame on. Safe diving -- KOB. Seems to me that if you're students were adequately prepared in confined water, they should be able to bring you to the surface without too much difficulty. If you become entangled, they should be able to cut you out of your predicament. If you're incapacitated but conscious, they should be able to push or tow you to shore. If anything else happens and your conscious and on the surface, you can give them direction. If they're taking a NAUI class and you pass out and stop breathing, they should be able to perform a basic rescue to the point of bringing you up correctly, stabilizing you on the surface, calling and waving for help, and beginning in-water resuscitation.(Don't know if any other agencies teach basic rescue at the entry level?) If you think they're that helpless during their open water training, consider that they are only a dive or two from being that helpless when you certify them.
