Only on this list can a simple request for information become argument. People need to use the computers keeping in mind the basic limitations of the underlying model in which they are created. I can see using a Trimix computer. But, reverse, spiked, or yo-yo profiles are forbidden under the Bulhmann (proplanner's base) model. It assumes a square profile like oh, so many of the decompression models we use. The cavers are limited in bottom time by max depth of their dives because of the spiking in the profiles they are diving. Probably, they use extreme conservatism because of the inherent risk in their profiles. Caves don't allow the Bulhmann model to be use as it was intended. Wreckers seem to have a easier time of it because of the uniform lie of the wreck itself. That does allow the models to be use in a manner consistent with the table design. RGBM does allow spiked profiles and the WKPP types have made good use of this model in its ABYSS form. Unfortunately, SUNNTO is the only manufacturer currently shipping with type of model in their dive computers. The basic point -- Use the decompression model in the computer as a guide for use. Don't use the model or computer in a way that it is not intended for. Tables are an excellent backup for computer users, especially if they use the model the computer is using. (VR3 computers = Bulhmann IANTD tables) I, for one, would appreciate having a few more brain cycles at depth, not having to think about my decompression profile. But you should not think that I am not prepared for the contingency that my computer could fail. -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
