Yes, 
it is important to do so. This leads automatically to comparing the
risks of diving to those of other remote locations sports,
mountaneering, dirtbiking, riding, cross country running
windgliding, and other.
While some fuckups seem unescapable, most benefit tremendously of having
a good buddy. 
A close friend of mine died while running from an aorta aneurisma.
Another one, just recently, while showing a customer the capabilities of
his motocross bike. 
2 other ones, middleaged, had a heart attack while diving.
All times no chance of help from a buddy, unluckily.

But on all the "minor" incidents, I would appreciate a good buddy
around.
