JT, this is fine, but the correct thing to do is describe the dive and not freak when suggestions are made. I made my suggestions on this subject based on a logbook full of them, and there is no reason for you to go off on it. True, you can offer the "reality" of these things and that should be stressed more so than the depth. Depth is not a good goal for divers, good diving is. They need to find out from you why that is true, not why they should try it. I have put a ton of work into developing systems and methods that have clearly reduced the odds, and I know you want to do the same. I have some minor suggestions for you that I think will make your operation bullet proof. I certainly do not want to put them on here in that form, it is too important to be subject to the cross fire of some of these strokes on here. I just had one idiot call me a "Nazi" and tell me there are other ways to dive. I guess when he starts diving he will let me know what those methods are, and I will certainly pass them on to you for a good laugh. On the subject of Berman, let me tell you that I thought he was a nice guy. When I went diving with JJ, who lived next door to Berman, I would leave my kids there and Berm would let them ride his three wheelers and play with all of his stuff. When I was first trying to learn cave diving , Berm took me on some dives where I needed an instructor to be able to dive, and he would not let me pay him. He used to let me use his tools and parts to fix my teknas back in the old days, and then I made him one of my scooters later on. The problem is he is dead. Sheck is dead. Sherwood is dead. Bobby is dead. Bill McFadden is dead. Dead nice guys do me no good, and they do nobody else any more good when they kill themselves doing non DIR things. I have an iron clad set of rules that I know beyond a shadow of a doubt are correct, and I will never compromise on them. Everyone can benefit from that if they will drop the resentment long enough to look at the facts. Like you say, you and I bickering does nothing, because we are really on the same side. It merely polarizes the peanut gallery and distracts from the message. -----Original Message----- From: Capt JT [mailto:captjt@mi*.co*] Sent: Monday, May 21, 2001 8:20 PM To: techdiver@aquanaut.com Subject: request from the list Trey, thank you for answering how I ask you to on your last post. You and I should stop this bickering back and forth. No one can learn a thing from it, nor do I want them to. All I care about is diving safely, facts, and fun. Clearly you can offer more technical facts to the list than I, but I believe I can offer sound advice on the reality of very deep dives/wreckdives with facts of the dives, I am the one doing them and they are no joke. We do not have to be friends, but merely on the same side of safety, I cannot save everyone, but just one is worth the effort to me.
