Has anyone been diving at Marmes Rock Shelter? It might be interesting to do... anyone interested? I was reading Paddle Routes of the Inland Northwest when I came across this: "... paddlers will come to the Marmes rock shelter, an archeological site discovered in 1962. In 1968, WSU scientists unearthed an ancient skeleton dating back 10,000 years - the oldest human remains discovered at that time... Unfotunately the find came one year before the site was to be flooded by Lower Monumental Dam. Progress was not about to be stopped, but the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers agreed to build a dike around the entrance to the cave as a last-ditch effort to preserve the dig site. The dike leaked. Water seeped in, and the cave ... is flooded by what is now called Marmes Pond." (page 90) I searched but couldn't find anything on the net about people diving this or any mention of depth. It would have to be a boat dive or a long hike from the closed road. I don't think it's that deep because they mention that boats give the area a wide berth. The pond is in SE Washington. Does anyone know anything about this? -ben __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
