Bill, since the DIR philosophy is to keep it as simple as possible, I 
have to ask.  Is there any reason why you think routing under the arm 
is necessary or advantageous?  If not, then you have your answer, the 
reason you don't use a longer hose and route under the arm is because 
you don't need the extra length, so why bring it?  I've been very 
happy with the regulator hoses configured as per DIR, and during an 
out of air situation (before I had a chance to practice this!!!!!!!!) 
it was no big deal to donate the long hose and find the backup reg. 
It was right under my nose....literally!
