In Germany they use steel grit of a typical grain diameter 0.5 mm. This is done because it allows a much better evaluation in the visual inspection. If tanks get rolled with corund gravel, the rust partikels will be smeared over fine crevices of corrosion, covering these from sight. Blasting takes the rust away and makes it clean.
