The Dive Rite HID wreck light is a well made, compact little light, and a
good deal for the price, but (the one I tried at least) it just doesn't put
out anywhere as much light as a 50watt halogen test tube lighthead. You
just can't get around the limitations of that tiny little reflector. It
puts out a lot of light for its size and price, but not that much. Several
other manufacturers, BTW, make almost identical lightheads now, but with
different beam spread and ballast options.

EE has a lovely testtube lighthead using the same ballast/bulb (well almost
the same) combo, but with a full size 3" reflector. It does put out just
about as much light as a 50W, but it costs a lot more than the DR (quite
reasonably, because a lot more work goes into making it).

HID is more expensive but you get some of your money back because you can
get by with a smaller and cheaper canister.

There's an HID light mailing list on yahoogroups ( don't have the address
handy, go to http://www.yahoogroups.com , search for "HID") that discusses
these issues, and has also turned into a general forum on divelights. Go
read through the archives and most of your questions will be answered along
with the ones you haven't asked yet.

There's also a book on canister divelights someone is peddling on the net
that explains all this, and is supposed to be pretty good.

Another thing to take into account, for intro cave, is what does your
instructor want you to have? The DR HID is nice for wrecks, but a lot of
instructors wouldn't let you use it in a cave.
