Well what can I say! I did my course with PADI, in Cairns last April. I
now have more than 60 dives under my belt and have started the tech courses
(DIR).

The organisation where I did the OW course was excellent in every respect.

The gear was well maintained, the instructors could actually instruct which
gave myself and my other half confidence in the water. That makes a big
difference.

Our instructor did fail one person. He was competent in the class room but
his water skills were a little bit to be desired but nothing too dramatic.
He did all the swims, tread water, the exercises, share air, mask off, OW
stuff etc etc without problems. He got more and more relaxed in the water
as the course went on but he needed more time. Even then who knows. The
fact is the instructor could have passed him but didn't.

In the OW (live aboard) the safety regulations were adhered too in every
way. If you wanted to get in the water you had to get an
instructor/captain to check your gear, sign a form, then once in the water
give the OK signal (this even happened in the pool). If you didn't you
would be plucked out of the water, sign a form, then try again. This
carried on after we had been certified.

On another "Reef Dive Organisation" it was different. We were certified 1
week.
My partner and I had become accustomed to the strict safely regulations
from the other organisation. I couldn't believe the difference. No OK
signals, no checks, nothing (we did sign a form though). My partner became
nervous.

I had to speak to the captain. After that things changed.

I have heard too many bad stories. Why oh why do people not walk away?

My message is, don't trust anyone until your satisfied that you have voiced
your opinion and that they are aware that you mean business.

If they don't respond, GET OUT OF THERE!!

Marty
