Todd, insult me all you want, the fact is that PADI sets the tone for its instructors and is ultimately responsible. If they have bad instructors, then they need to better control who becomes instrokter certified. While the basic PADI training may be ok for open water (this is also debatable), the fact is that basically every one gets certified. I remember an instructor (who was actually quite good) handing a woman her C-card with the admonition "now remember what we talked about, you really need some more training before you start diving". My favorite PADI story though, is from a guy who got certified in a quarry. The vis. was so bad that every one was holding on to a big rope circle, the instructor and 6 students. After going down a few feet, A. couldn't see anything, not the rope, not his gauges, nothing. A few more feet, and he figured this was just too stupid and dangerous, he let go of the rope, and ascended to the surface. One other guy was already there, and who do you think it was? Yup, the instructor. Oh yeah, and they all got their C-cards. Cheers.
