I do have a bottom timer. I use a Vyper in gauge mode as my primary gauge
and have a OMS(aka-Uwatec) as my backup. Unfortunately, both of these timers
only count in full minute increments. My deco program (Abyss RBGM) has 30
second intervals on it's deco stops. When I mean stopwatch, I mean just
that. Something that I could start/stop and reset for each stop. This would
be in addition to my bottom timer, not to replace it.
Deco stops are kind of boring and an idle mind has lots of room to wander
while hanging there. Consider this: If you dive a 240fsw dive for 25
minutes, you will have 17 deco stops. If you ascend at 30fpm it would take
you 20 seconds to arrive at your next stop. If you do not take this into
account, then you would shorten your total recommended deco time by about 6
minutes (17stops X 0.33minutes=5.661 minutes). If you decide to wait for
your timer to hit the next minute (0.66 seconds) and then count your deco
time, you will hang an additional 12 minutes over your recommended deco time
(17stops X 0.66minutes=11.22minutes). Since I do have the RBGM program, I
would like to take advantage of the short, deep stops that it recommends.
It might seem trivial but I do like to strive for accuracy in my dive
planning AND it's execution.
I was down at Brownies Third Lung in Ft. Lauderdale the other day and they
mentioned using a stopwatch function bottom timer so I was wondering if such
an item exists, other than in the form of a dive watch. This question was
more to satisfy my curiosity and not so much to be an "I gotta have one
now!" type of question.
