Jim, I'm not going to tell you what gear to buy, others will do a 
better job.  I do have some advice though:

1) Don't buy anything until you're sure it's the right thing.  Most 
likely you will end up wanting to configure in full DIR fashion, and 
even small, seemingly insignificant details will come back to haunt 
you later.  I wasted a lot of money on stuff I don't use anymore. 
You're doing the right thing by asking first.

2) Join GUE.  If you blow enough money at Extreme Exposure, which you 
will, membership is free.  Check the GUE web page for details, I 
think that it costs $100 to join and you get $100 off any purchase of 
$300 or more.  Once you join, you can subscribe to Quest and look at 
the quest archives, an invaluable resource.

3) I would get really comfortable diving doubles before going for a 
certification.  You don't want to deal with unfamiliar gear when 
you're learning stuff.

4) Don't be put off if you get flamed.  If the info is good, no 
matter the style of delivery.
