This is one way of doing it:
If somebody has a better way, please tell me as I am always learning,

Tie a piece of rope through one of the "water out let holes" (excuse my
english) and hold it with a knot outside.
Have the rest as a big loop in the pocket.
Clip off your stuff to the loop. when you need something grab the whole
loop, pick what you need and to get it back just pull on the string outside.
Then grab into the pocket and pull the string back so it doest get caught in
things.
Alternatively put a knot on the inside of the hole as well so the reminder
of he loop cant be pulled outside and just push the stuff back.
