The man you want to get hold of is Donny Hamilton, he teaches a course on 
artifact preservation and has a web based lab book with cook book type of 
processes for doing the job. Another book to look for is "Preservation of 
Marine Artifacts" by Colon Person. It was published by Butterworth and is now 
out of print but it may be in your library.

If you want some detailed info on simple processes, get back to me off line 
and I will try to help.
