To put it bluntly, this is amazing bullshit! Sorry to deviate from my normal form but this is getting really deep. Steve is right. If someone is saying, in training, that they cannot use 100% because of "dry throat, discomfort in their lungs, and other side effects" then they are suffering from some sort of psychosomatic problem, i.e. "the IANTD and TDI manual said this is bad for me, so I must be having these problems", or they are a physiological abnormality and should not be in the water. Training dives will not last long enough for anyone to develop problems with O2, unless they are using some basterdized shit from the start. >90% of students are not able to maintain buoyancy to use 100%, so instead of not teaching them at a rapid rate and giving them time to learn the basics, lets get them to use a mix that is not optimal, seriously flawed logic. Granted one needs to be concerned about liability, especially in this law suit happy day and age, but would it not be better to teach the student slowly and correctly the first time than to milk them for money give them a card and send them off to die. Do you know there is an instructor still teaching that will take you from OW to full cave in one week and in the very next week certify you for trimix? Trailers can't be that expensive, why is this? 1.6 is 1.6 is 1.6 is 1.6 . . . 1.6! These people that you speak of that have to use 50%, if they use it at 70 feet they are still facing the same pO2 they would see if they were to use O2 at 20. Sure one could speculate that "because of Y%of N in my mix, it counters the problems induced by X" but they usually don't dive anyway. The "cost" logic was flawed from the beginning and should not be used. Having 100 divers, man your numbers are off, make a statement may not be enough to make claims for 16 millions, but 1 out of 8 is better? When are you guys going to see that there is so much more beyond just the WKPP that is interested in what we do? I spend hours a month on the phone to everyone from the US Navy, to leading hyperbaric docs, to the Discovery Channel, people are interested in this because it works. There is a better way than what has been shoved down everyone's throat because of fear and ignorance, what will it take for those that still cling to their days of glory to wake up and see this? It has been a rough day, but I feel better now ;-) I'll be back soon with my normal delivery and information.
