Subject: Advice on Halcyon bladder size?
Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2000 14:22:46 +0200
Hello!

I am trying to go from a rec-singles rig to a DIR doubles rig. Everything i
bought, from head to toe, after the OW class four years ago was poseidon. So
I have some work ahead of me.

So one of the first things I did was to buy used a Halcyon wing & SS
backplate. As it was a 65 lbs lift bladder it was to big to dive with a
single tank. (I wanted to learn my new BC before puting doubles on it) So
what did I do? I bought a scuba pro rec-tek wing with those "semi-bungee"
cords, with pull bump and everything! I thought that the cord would make it
ideal to dive both singles and doubles and that the pull dump was good since
I was used to one and I could gradualy stop using it. Some people learn the
expensive way! The pull dump leaked from the first dive and it took me 8
spoiled dives to figure out why my bouyancy control suddenly sucked (my
buddies didn't see the bubbles!). After this and another incident (buying a
Dive Rite canister light with a twist on lamp head) I decided to take it
real slow and not try to figure things out the hard(and expensive) way all
the time. So now I'm going to try to trade my 65 lb blader for the 55 or 45
lb Halcyon bladder and buy a smaller one for single tank diveing. So my
question is what bladder size is optimal??

In sweden we have steel doubles in 2*10, 2*12, 2*15, 2*18 litres. I am
thinking of 2*12 or 2*15. What i want to know is what is the maximum set of
doubles and stages you could take on a 45, 55 and 65 lb halcyon bladder??
What's the maximum doubles set for a bladder if you don't wear any stages at
all?
I have a Halcyon SS backplate and still a Poseidon neopren drysuit, which I
can't afford to replace right now.

It says on the GUE home page you shouldn't have to big a bladder(though you
might need one if you don't have a overboard discharge valve :)), but
nothing about what sizes are apropriate. If I ask someone in a dive shop
here, they all seem to go for the bigger is better solution. A table with
bladder size vs optimal tank size or the other way around would be extremly
useful for people like me who are buying their first set of doubles+BC and
don't whant to buy the wrong setup.

Any answers would be much appreciated!
Thank you for your patience!
/Olle
