People try to get way too complicated in defining technical diving vs
recreational diving for my taste. A technical dive can be defined simply as
"any sport dive involving a ceiling, whether real or virtual, severely
restricting the diver's access to the surface in the event of an emergency."
Conversely a recreational dive can be defined simply as "any no-stop sport
dive with easy access to the surface." Since penetration dives withing the
"natural light zone" do provide reasonably easy access to the surface, they
are recreational in nature. As penetration dives beyond the "natural light
zone" and dives requiring stage decompression do not provide easy access to
the surface they are technical in nature.
What gases are employed, depth of the dive or whether the diver is using
an open circuit, semi-closed circuit or closed circuit system is not an issue
from my point of view. A dive either permits a bailout to the surface without
an unacceptable exposure to risk (recreational) or it doesn't (technical).
As for defining the term "technical diver," I would simply offer this
definintion; "any sport diver executing technical dives and using state of
the art equipment, techniques and gases to reduce the associated risk."
