Mr. Ward, I was the person responsible for organizing that demo in Monterey, and I'd like to apologize for the way things were (or weren't) handled. Essentially that event evolved rather quickly with very little wind up time to prepare or brief the shop staff (who answered all the phone calls and emails). It simply came to pass that Mr. Kane made a very generous offer to present a demo on DIR in Monterey and I was interested in taking advantage as soon as possible. NO ONE was excluded from the activities for any reason; in fact the only individuals at the beach attempting to exclude people were PADI/SSI/NAUI instructors keeping their students away. Anyone would have been welcome, even if your initials were MJB. Everyone presenting was very patient and all questions were answered clearly, factually, and appropriately. I am not entirely certain who told you about the "blackballing" of individuals working for other shops, but I can assure you that he or she was incorrect. If you wish to discuss this further, please feel free to contact me privately and I'll cheerfully dispel any other untruths you may have heard about the demo. Additionally, if you wish to attend the second demo (8/19 and 8/20), I'd be glad to see you, and quite happy to book you a spot on the boat. And that goes double for anyone else who'd be willing to open their minds to a new idea. Going to a DIR demo doesn't mean that you're admitting you're wrong or that someone else is right- it simply means that you're willing to learn. And what's wrong with that? I couldn't make it Saturday, because I had to work. -- Andrew A.
