< some one suggested that the BSAC have gotten rid of the 10' foot stop but made an error in their explanation of why..> ewn The BSAC 88 tables do not use a 3m and 6m stop they use a 6m and 9m stop depth. When I went to a meeting of the Underwater Association just after the tables came out the explaination for this was to try and off gas before the bubbles had a chance to increase in size. I do not remember what the graphs looked like but it seemed plausible. Since the greetest changes in volume occurs between 10m and the surface they also slowed the ascent rate to 6m a minute and made that (or 9m if you had to stop there) the check depth and end of the dive time. This eliminated variations in peoples ascent rates to the surface which might extend bottom time if they ascended too slowly.(still maintaining a max ascent of 15m a min. to 9 or 6m). John Gibbons i
