Many divers in the UK are effectively doing just that under BSAC 1988 tables.
Ok, in that implementation 10 ft becomes 3m and 20 ft becomes 6m (19.5ft), but 
what is 6 inches between friends?

So there is a very large cohort of divers doing exactly what you suggest. I'm 
not aware of any DCS problems with the BSAC tables approach ... however the 
incident statistics we hear of are published by ... the BSAC :-)
