The rationale (G, please correct me if I'm wrong) is that an air balanced reg is more sensitive than a non-air balanced one. And as the backup reg hangs around your neck - maybe even with the mouthpiece facing upwards (at times) - you'd want a reg with as low 'spillage' as possible.
