Actually there is a company out there which makes a "universal manifold"
which allows you to make doubles out of any conceivable combination of
tanks, a strokes dream come true. You can see it advertised in tech
magazines. It use HP hoses and other ridiculous parts and adapters to
accomplish this.

I agree that the routing options is the engineers original intention.
