Jos, There are several portable filter systems on the market. The most economical one I have found is the once from L-Factor. This is a single tower that has a single replaceable element in it. This unit goes for just over $1100 US. The replacement cartridges are about $80 US. It should last the average diver about a season. I use it more for peace of mind than anything else. It means you can expect a consistent quality air no matter what air station you use. Compared to cost of the rest of the gear. it's not too expensive, but it's not definetely no cheap either.... One thing to keep in mind with these things is that there is a throttle that limits the air flow to about 6 CFM. This makes topping off or filling large doubles a slow process.
