Jos,

There are several portable filter systems on the market.  The most economical
one I have found is
the once from L-Factor.  This is a single tower that has a single replaceable
element in it.  This
unit goes for just over $1100 US.  The replacement cartridges are about $80 US.
It should last
the average diver about a season.

I use it more for peace of mind than anything else. It means you can expect a
consistent quality
air no matter what air station you use.  

Compared to cost of the rest of the gear. it's not too expensive, but it's not
definetely no cheap
either....

One thing to keep in mind with these things is that there is a throttle that
limits the air flow
to about 6 CFM.  This makes topping off or filling large doubles a slow process.
