If your buddy is conscious why wouldn't he be able to clear it himself with
the purge?  If you purge it for him and he gets a longer than expected blast
that could increase his anxiety/panic level dramatically.

   Einar, it can work both ways.  If you are handing off the reg you may
want to purge it for the OOA diver.  There are situations where this may not
be feasable, as in the case of a restricted passage.  In this position all
you can do is hand the reg behind you in hopes that the diver can reach it.
If the OOA diver takes the reg out of you mouth then they are probably going
to be able to purge the reg themselves.  Don't try to fight the reg back
just so you can purge it.  This may take more time and result in a drowning.
