If you are looking for information to support instructors against =
claims of
bad training, etc. you aren't going to get a lot of support from this =
list.
I lived in the northwest up until last year and still dive there on =
visits.
Do a little reaearch on the "horror stories" and you will find in most =
cases
they do have to do with the level of training the students received. =
Mass
market Open Water courses are turning out divers that have no business =
being
in the water. The pressure is on the instructor to rush them through =
and
pass everybody regardless of how well they picked up the skills taught =
in
the course. And remember, the "raging stupidity" of the students is =
because
they were not taught that what they are doing is stupid. Look into the
minimum requirements on becoming an instructor and you will find that =
it is
6 months of being certified and between 50 and 100 logged dives and a 1 =
week
course on how to teach diving. This is nowhere near enough to create
competent instructors that will turn out qualified divers.

Can't help you out here,

Don

Steve,Bill,Jt
I must admit, I smiled when I read your post.I didn't realize how my =
message
sounded. No,=20
I'm not an ambulance=20
chaser or even a lawyer.You guys sure are a suspicious bunch.I tried to =
put
my name in the=20
adresser box but it wasn't working I=20
think=20
I got it, though. My name is Natalie, I dive in the Northwest and I'm =
just a
diver who is=20
looking=20
to see the differentiation between stories of divers who have died =
through
thier own=20
poor judgment and/or lack of training for the dives they do and the=20
instuctors who get black-balled because of their students raging =
stupidity.=20
And the other side where because of the instructor's negligence these=20
incidents happen. =A0Sometimes people do not see the difference between =
these=20
two types of episodes. =A0Instuctors can get their reputations ruined =
by
having their students go=20
out and do stupid things. "and such and such dead diver was the student =
of
so and so." So=20
when people spout that all these divers "died at the hands of thier
instuctors" it makes me=20
wonder. I'm asking this list because I don't think there is a book =
about it
out there. But if you=20
know of one please tell me. And I am going to use this information to =
give a
reply to people=20
who go off half cocked about instructors.

Nat
