Just to reinforce a point Christina Young made

        1950's and '60s, before the "recreational-technical" community got
        into mixed gases"

bear in mind that in Australia there was no availability of 'recreational'
mixed gas training until very recently.  I believe the first nitrox courses
were offered in 1991, and the first mixed gas course was offered last year.

That's not to say that people weren't using mixed gas prior to this, but
agency based training has only recently become available, and is still only
offered by a few people.
