It is good to see everyone's discussion of this issue. I think that
the primary reasons for deep air diving are really simple, though:
1. Cost - Some deep air divers I know here dive deep several times
a week, and can't afford the high cost of trimix fills all the
time. There is also more equipment and equipment servicing
required, and this costs money.
2. Extra training required - Some just haven't gotten around to taking
a trimix course, and some have been doing deep air dives since the
1950's and '60s, before the "recreational-technical" community got
into mixed gases, and see no reason to change. And some dive air
very deep because they are only OWI certified (but have racked
up years of experience), and it would require many classes to get them
up to the trimix level.
Of course, there are other reasons as well, but these are the ones for
the people that I know that dive deep air.

P.S. By the way, no flames, please, I am not endorsing any of these
reasons, I am just stating it as it is (defining reality).
