This past weekend I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to see the IMAX movie "Titanica" in Norwalk. It included an impressive penetration into the huge engine room of the Titanic by one of the two Russian Mir deep diving submarines (crew of 3) on the expedition. It was pretty scary, though, when they got stuck on some hanging debris while trying to exit. It took them several, hair-raising, hull-banging minutes to break free. I'm sure at one point the guys thought they were going to die down there, at 12,000+ fsw. Although this qualifies as a deep dive (1 atm, I suppose), it isn't exactly an air dive. The atmosphere inside the Mir subs has a very high FO2, the movie didn't say exactly how high, but the crew must wear flame-retardant suits (one of the Russian scientists said this is to give them an extra 5 seconds to live). A good movie if anyone has a chance to see it... LOTS of artifacts... they found the engine telegraph sitting in the sand, set on "slow ahead", not "full reverse" as widely believed. Christina
