Today's New York Times (Tues., 2/7/95, in the Science section) has an interesting article about how the US Navy's deep-diving sub NR-1 will be searching will be searching the bottom of the Mediterranian Sea for ancient Roman shipwrecks. The Navy is loaning it to Dr. Bob Ballard for this purpose. The NR-1 seems to be quite a sub. It has wheels so it can roll across the sea floor, sensors, cameras and manipulators for picking up artifacts. Crew consists of 11, plus 2 scientists. It is the deepest-diving nuclear-powered sub in the world, although the max depth for the sub is not mentioned (and may be secret). It does say that the some of the Roman wrecks are 1/2 mile deep. While the article is non-technical, it is good reading nevertheless. Just thought someone out there may be interested... Christina
