Although they do not provide all data collected for every single accident, they have this data compiled into various statistics. They also have a section where they describe the accident scenarios for those ones which have resulted in death. After reading these reports, I have often thought that the statistics they presented were somewhat incomplete. Statistics relating to accidents due to O2 tox hits are completely missing, for example. I have the feeling that they have misclassified these into other categories. And also, it is important to remember that they do not relate the accident rates to the total number of dives (probably a difficult number to estimate, anyway). The fatality case studies are written in such a way as to lead me to believe that the motive of the author was to discredit certain diving behaviors, such as deep diving. For example, in all cases where the dive was 100 feet or deeper, narcosis was listed as a major cause of death (though not the primary cause). I just use these reports to educate myself and learn from them. Some of the case studies can be quite morbid, though, and you can come away with a feeling that diving is quite dangerous. The quality of the reports does seem to improve a little with each passing year, though I don't know about the quality of the statistics. Just my 2 cents... Christina
