When I was a kid, I'd swim in the ocean until I was half frozen.  I
didn't mind (in fact, I hardly noticed), but Mom would always make me
get out when she noticed my lips turning blue from the cold (I was then
given a shot of whisky to "warm me up", but that's another story :-).

Could the blue nose be a related phenomenon?
