Every single one of those guys (close to 100 in my year there) bought gear and kept coming back for more.... created some very loyal customers. (Hmm, this is beginning to touch on the economics thread...that didn't work well with other types of folk, but the lifeguards were great.) >> This is a great idea. When my father was in the navy he stopped in a diner with his uniform on, and they feed him for free. When he opened a restaurant that ran for 12 years it stuck with him. He feed anyone in a uniform for free, except local on duty cops do to the fact that it would not have looked right. However they did get free drinks, i.e., coffee and soda, no alcohol lol. Maybe you and other dive shops can extend this idea to military divers. One of the men on my dive team is an ex navy deep saturation instructor. He was a navy diver for 22 years, and one of the best divers I have ever met, yet his navy certs seem worthless. except to us, our sop allows navy certs. As far as fire station air, once again, a lot of stations use grade E air. For fun dives that's the best you need, and that's the best you will ever get at a padi 5 star joint.
