Subject: Re: Dual OMS 45's
Hello Cam,

I agree they do make nice streamlined back mounts. I have a pair that I use
primarly in a side mounted configuration for sump diving. The size of the
tanks do offer IMO a much better back mounted open water set up as well.
This of course for dives when the full Montey is not needed.

A few years ago DiveRite had a run of modular valves that had been cut too
short where the manifold/crossover would normally go. This did not effect
the barrel where the double O-rings seal. It just made them usless for
trying to put double 95's or 104's together. The Diver Supply in Macon Ga.
had them on sale for around 30 dollars ea. so I grabbed a set of left and
right valves.

For open water diving, as well as some sump diving, I install the standard
isolator, along with a custom set of bands. The space between the tanks is
around 2.5" and they do ride tight against the aluminum back plate with
standard or junior wings.

This rig is the minumin I dive for any conditions anymore. The package is
just to good to pass up. Has true redundancy as the ability to isolate is
there if needed, You have a complete reg back up, they swim great, and they
give plenty of gas for lessor dives that don't require deco.

Another positive thing about this rig is when it come to traveling. When I
go down to Central America, I don't have to worry about finding or renting
any tanks. I can set the 45's up and they fit perfectly in a medium sized
piece of tow luggage I bought at Sams that had roller blade wheels. Tanks
empty, two regs, one pressure gauge, with wings and fins weigh in at the
allowable 70 LBS. I have to carry the back up regs and other diving related
items in my other check-in or carry on luggage with my dive suit and lights.

I'll probably get a few raised brows for mentioning this and I'm not
suggesting anyone does this, but...
I think you could probably cut down a regular modular valve to bring the
tanks closer and do the same as I did. If you look at the left and right
valves you will notice on DiveRite and similar valves one side is shorter
than the other (can't remember which side)anyway. Only the longer side
would need be cut to match the other to bring the tanks together enough to
make some custom bands to have the same comfiguration as I. My set up uses
nearly all the available threads between the ISO and modular valve except
for three sixteenths inch on each side.
If any elect to try this, and I'm not saying they should, just make certain
to mic everything so as not to compromise the valves.

Regards JD
