Another thing to note is that there is a big difference in chargers! The simple two stage chargers as supplied with most dive lights, EE included, let the battery voltage drop by 10% or more before they automatically top it up, so that battery could be as much as 15% down when you use it, depending on where in the cycle it happens to be when you need it. This cycling, it is claimed, also reduces the service life. The three stage chargers keep the battery continually at 100%. People who have tried them both tell me that lights seem to burn noticably longer when charged with the Deltran, a three stage, than the Shumacher. I've been playing with a cheaper alternative, a made-in-China three-stage called the Sure Charge but haven't reached any conclusions yet. They also have a model that includes a high frequency zap cycle that is supposed to undo sulfation, and the maker claims can often bring "tired" batteries back to full life, but I haven't tried it. -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
