So, would the best choice be the PST to begin with? Or the OMS with an 
aluminum backplate?  I'm a little confused.

why would you pay a premium to get a ss backplate, then pay a premium for
OMS tanks, which as you mentioned suck as soon as you scatch them, when you
could just get the cheaper PST's in the first place?  That is the exact
opposite of DIR.
