Subject: RE: Wing deflation problem

John

I use a Diverite Original wing, with a truck inner tube liner, the original
inner bladder cover, then the bladder itself. I have found a very few times
only at the end of a dive when there is a delay in the wing dumping from the
convoluted hose. Since this was then end of the dive, there was little gas
remaining in the wing at this point. Not a big problem nor a frequent one.

Reading your email caused me to think about this. I use the superb Apeks US4
first stages and the only problem I have with them was a very minor complaint
about routing the HP hose. I had the backup hose behind the wing and the HP
over the wing. This caused the wing to be pushed forward and there being
some difficulty in slotting the wing between the cylinder and the HP hose. I
have recently changed the way I do this now and am now very happy with it.
Both HP and backup go over the wing and the whole lot sits more comfortably
and with less stress on the hoses and wing. The wing on the left hand side
now sits more comfortably against the cylinder neck with no pinching or tight
angles. I dived it this weekend at Stoney and had about 1 Kg of lift left
and on this occasion had no problem dumping the wing - not a statistically
significant observation since the slow dumping is a very occasional thing.

Now, it occurred to me that the effect of the HP hose one side and the backup
hose the other side of the wing and the angle the wing had to be placed in,
partly also due to the position of the bladder-convoluted hose connection
pressing on the cylinder neck may have caused a pinching effect on the wing
which may slow the migration of the gas from the left side of the wing to the
dump hose.

So, after this long story, I would check this out to see if it is a possible
cause for your buddy.

I had a problem recently where a buddy was unable to dump air from her wing.
The wing in question was a DiveRite Classic wing, the buddy was diving
wetsuit and twin AL80s.

Is there some inherent problem with wings in general which can cause this
problem under certain circumstances?

If not, is this a known problem with DR wings and are the Halcyon wings any
better (in this respect)?
