Subject: Re: computers? 1 depth gauge, 2 time keepers, your mother in law.

<< Below is a quick Bakers on computers. Can anyone come up with
additional
issues. >>

Here are ten I thought up last night. They are raw and need some work.

Tod

1. They are based on Buhlman models which have been shown to be lacking. Does
not incoporate the latest by Weinke on bubble mechanics, etc.
2. Do not permit deep stops and consequenty bend and treat. This is a proven
unsafe manner in which to decompression.
3. They incorporate huge padding algorithms because of the population who are
lawyers, know lawyers, are related to lawyers. Consequently, they are
configured for once a year vacation divers in Hawaii.
4. They keep you in the water longer than needed. This increases the chances
of rough seas, shipping lanes, CNS tox, etc.
5. Provide no bail out options. Loose deco gas and no alternative schedule is
available for getting out of the water safely.
6. Do not allow the use of helium mixes, and technical dives by their vary
nature should be using helium beyond sport limits. This in itself negates the
use of computers.
7. Most technical dives (ie, shipwrecks) are square profiles and recieve no
advantge from mult-level computers.
8. Encourage brain-dead diving by not forcing the diver to plan their dive.
Jump in the water, check out your brain, and come up when the computer goes
beep, beep. Technical diving requires thinking every step through.
9. Do not permit the running of what-if scenarios important to gas selection,
volumes, and profiling.
10. Computers can get bent through their many failure points (batteries,
pressure sensor, getting jarred on a reef) and thus are unreliable for the
depths and bottom times discussed here. The GUE, WKPP, and Navy do not use
computers for good reason.
