In the last few weeks I have seen a number of people suffering free-flow
problems in the quarries in the UK. One of these was a Poseidon Jetstream which
froze up at -40mfw in Dorothea where the temp was 6 degrees C. Another
happened in the same site a third in Caperwrey (7degrees C) and a fourth in
Hodge Close Quarry (4degrees C). Although only one of these incidents was
a poseidon it is interesting to note such a large number seen by one person in
three weeks!!

When I spoke to all four divers I discovered that no-one had used any form of
environmental protection - cap or otherwise -. Most importantly when asked if
they had breathed from the reg BEFORE submerging the first and second stage
they looked blank and said "YES". From experience, buddy's of mine, and I have
learned that this is crucial. If you submerge the entire reg in the cold
water prior to testing it then the chances of freezing are greatly reduced.

Does anyone else have any comments on this procedure. It seems to be little
known amongst the diver's I have met at these revolting quarries.
