I think two things got it.  First, when tank contents is used to dry the 
dust cap, the water can be sprayed into the inlet of the regulator very 
easily.  This is described in Vance Harlow's "SCUBA Regulator Maintenance 
and Repair", I have noticed this one set of mine and changed the way I do 
it, to prevent water from contaminating the inlet.

Second, you my be putting too much trust in cap to keep out water while 
soaking it.  The cap can keep out dust but not provide a seal tight enough 
for water.  Also, pressing the purge can let water flow backward into the 
hose, then it has a straight shot to the 1st stage.  For soaks, I keep the 
1st stage on a tank and pressurized.
