Would this, perhaps, allow us to analyze a >set of doubles for helium, after a dive, and thus lead to a safe methodology >for topping off the tanks with helium and O2 for the next dive? Dave - Sure -- but it's completely unnecessary if you just do the math. The proporation of Helium in your mix hasn't changed during the dive. If you started out with a 20/40 mix, you end up with a 20/40 mix -- just less of it. If you end your dive with 1000 psi of 20/40, you can bet your tanks contain 200 psi 02, 400 psi Helium, and 400 psi Nitrogen. You can do the math longhand or punch those numbers into a remix program and it will give you precisely the amount of O2, HE and air to add to produce your remix. You can check the accuracy of each top off by doing the intermediate analyses after adding the extra HE or O2 like I mentioned in my original post. (Personally, I think basic gas blending like this should be a requirement for all trimix courses.) The He analyzer would make this easier, though I'd like to see the calibration requirements on the unit. I would also bet that its cost will make it a dive shop only item, so I'm not ready to toss out my pencil and pad just yet.
