Dave, Are you sure? I've set up a few of these and the mods you are suggesting are things that I try to avoid. Personally I do not like the backplate rocking wrt the cylinders, so I make sure that any v-weights are not proud, and would never add nuts to shim it as you suggest. Also, once the straps are the correct length, I do not need the slack and trapping the webbing keeps the straps as I want them.
