Michael >Anybody ever get an airfill and find the air tasted funny? A long, long time ago... Before fitting the first stage to my DIN fittings, I stick my thumb in the fitting and crack the valve to clear any moisture or crud. Once, on a weekend's diving on the second day, I noticed a black oily deposit on my thumb. The gas also smelled funny. I rechecked using a white tissue over the valve and dry black deposits were seen again. I alerted the rest of the boat, most of whom had received fills from the same place and the majority had the same problems to some extent. I decided not to dive but the remainder of the boat did not want to lose UKP 30, and left for their dive with their contaminated cylinders! Clearly, the value they placed upon their lives was less than UKP 30. At the dive shop, we dismantled the cylinders and found a black deposit - carbon from one of the newly replaced filters. My cylinders were otherwise OK and so was the air. I am still diving, one has since died due to another act of complacency. This happened to me once, with an Aluminum 80 current on VIP and Hydro, and filled at a reputable dive shop. I swear the air had a carbon taste to it, almost like cigarette smoke, and very subtle.
