Machael, was it your cylinder or the dive shops?

If you're ever unfortunate enough to experience
this again, drain the cylinder slowly and then
drop a light. You just may get a surprise.
Carefully look at the dip tube and bottom of the
valve. If you notice a black residue here of some
black particulate lying in the bottom, the
filtration system of the compressor has major
problems.

You being a physician, I don't have to explain
"Black Lung Disease," to you.

Any of us who have ever done many visuals have
seen this. You would be surprised as well how
many times it is seen coming from "Reputable"
sources.

I had a couple of regulars come in once
complaining of nausea, headaches and foul taste
in their mouth. Asked me to check the air for
them. Smelled just like Quaker State 30 weight.
They had got some air up in Georgia but
fortunately were only diving the river in <10 ft.
of water. Otherwise, it could have been very
deadly.

Believe it or not, a lot of people running
compressors are too cheap to buy high quality
synthetic food grade oil and choose to use
automotive petroleum based at customers peril.

Also let me add, there are no industry standards
which require operators to be certified to run a
compressor and deliver air. Recently the Florida
Legislature passed a "Bandaid" law to address
this but it is of little value because the people
writing it had less knowledge of the problem than
those causing it. Don't believe that if they have
a quarterly test report posted that it can't
happen either. Numerous factors can change the
results on any given day. This is why the new law
will not cure the problem.

Your best bet, know your operators qualifications
to run a system, does he also use his air
personally and understand the possible health
problems from producing bad product, test your
own air with a mechanical devise and/or just take
a sniff off the valve with it slowly flowing.

Just FYI & my .02 cents worth,

Sincerely

William
