Alan,

Johns advice is useful, the local shop just might be willing to sell you a
manufactures specific tube of sillicone. However Vance Harlow recommends dow
corning 7 or 111 in his new regulator repair book, and you can probably get
that at the hardware store without all those funny questions.

The book, btw, is a spectacular source of info about fixing regs.
