Manos et al, MHK's point, and the point which should soon become more apparent within NAUI circles, is that a continuum exists which contains both recreational and technical diving....and in the "ideal" form or recreational training/diving, as well as "ideal" tek training and diving, all the skills learned in recreational are used to build on the skills used in tek. Diving does not need two separate and unrelated sets of skills, and in fact this would be a travesty if we all allowed this to continue. The DIR style of diving applies equally to both recreational and tek, and in fact, is a close fit to many of the most important ideas which NAUI implemented back in the early 70's (when thoughtfulness about diving skills overshadowed thoughtfulness about market share) . Happily, no reduction in marketing effectiveness would occur if NAUI was to suddenly adopt DIR mindsets, gear configurations and skills. If you read all the available DIR articles, or go diving with some of the founders of DIR you will quickly see this is a movement based on a better way, and one NAUI could benefit from enormously. Im a Naui Instructor for the last 2 years and if i look back at my long term training i wouldn't find anything in recreational diving that blends with tech Diving. And you know why ? Simply because it is impossible to compare oranges with onions. I am a multiple personality person like any recreational instructor should be when teaching a course or when diving at extremes with tech equipment. We are subscribed to this list to share ideas and not to argue with each other. It is impossible again to understand the logic of applying the same rules on 2 completely different subjects. If you take the risk of tech dive then you accept rules and procedures that look crazy and suitable to others. Manos Manoli Greek Island of Cyprus.
