The logic? I was doing acid when I wrote this. No, actually, the logic is just that you do not have enough time saved at each stop on a short dive by using all the gases, and even if you did use them, you would have to spend more time at the stops to get any real benefit, which would then only shorten the upper stops, and you need to do the slow ascent from 20 feet anyway, and I count that as part of the stop. With shorter dives I do not even use oxygen, but my big concern is reducing my vital capaciy for other sports which require giant heart rates and fast breathing - not an issue for most people. Said anohter way, Nick, if the bottom time is just a tad longer, the level of gas absorbtion is so much higher that you really need to spend the time deeper on the higer ppo2 gas to get a clean deco. Why not just use a gas for each stop ( like a CCR )? You also need to alternate back and forth between high and low ppo2's during deco, and use the reduction in the pressure gradient as a key tool in forcing offgassing. You also do not want to much vasoconstriction or lung swelling , so the alternate ppo2's and the breaking to back gas (very low ppo2 ) helps quite a bit.
