Tie it on. We actaully use a double ender for that. If you twist the reel, it will break the snap at the slide or the aluminum anyway. On a wreck dive, you would have nothing that is not tied - nothing. In a cave, the reel can get snaged in the line, but that is not going to kill you. On a wreck it might. Also, laying line is not an emergency situation, usless you are diving wiht me, nad then it better not get stuck or I will cut your harness off to get it.
