Stay away from the Cochran's!!!!! Sorry Joel, I think they suck..... I have a Commander NITROX that when it worked was good but sucked big time when it crapped out (about half the time on repeat dive). I've sent it back twice and still happens. I've heard good things about the Nitek though. The Commander would be fine on the first dive and would get me a little more time than the tables (I'm not wall diving but wreck diving so the depth varies by maybe 15 feet of MAX). On the repeat dive when it worked I'd get out a little before my tables but when it crapped out it wanted me to stay in for hours! Also, I have a lot of friends that have dive computers. Typically if you're staying within recreational limits or really small deco they work fine. When you start to do more aggressive deco (especially with deco gas) they really have trouble and don't buy you much on the repeat dive. My suggestion is that you really shouldn't be doing dives where your depth is varying by a lot without a plan (i.e. a cave). Remember going up and down during the dive is more probably to create bubbles and cause trouble. Plan the dive and dive the plan. I used to run my Commander with no conservative setting and on square profiles it was worthless. Basically the same as my Decom tables. I started using it as a bottom timer about a year or two ago and strictly follow tables now. Went to use it 2 weeks ago and the damn thing had totally crapped out. Tried new batteries after checking the voltage but no good. I don't think I'll send it back cause they'll probably charge me more to fix it than for me to buy a nice new shinny bottom timer. We are in a similar position now. It seams that although bottom timers ( along a pre plan computer software ) work fine with cave divers it simply waisting a lot of dive time on dives in open sea specially when exploring new areas where depth varies every minute. ( i still cannot figure it out how can you explore the unknown with a bottom timer, being most of the time much higher than your max depth its a rocky multi level rock side here in the Greek Island of Cyprus). Thinking of purchasing a multi-gas underwater computer , i wanna her some advice , brand , models from people with experience using them Rgds Manos Manoli. -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
