Manos, you need to understand decompression. If you do that you do not need a computer. If you are diving a wreck where you know that the depth is between say 60 and 70m you can calculate your approximate average depth with quite good accuracy, add a few meters to be conservative if you desire. Just monitor you depth and times at depth carefully during the dive, with some practice you will get a very accurate average depth. The BT starts when you hit the wreck depending on what software you are using. In Abyss for example you can set your decent speed and as long as you approximately follow this speed you can start the BT when you reach the wreck. If you are anal about getting the deco precisely right (acording to the software) you can take the decent time from Abbys and use the time as a guide line. If the decent time is say 3 min, as long as you do not exceed this time you are fine. Decom on the other hand does not take decent in to account at all but i still prefer Decom for it's simplicity. When using Decom i still start the BT on the wreck if the dive is not very deep because there is so much safety margin in all the software's anyway. Finally remember that decompression is not a precise science, the models are just a best guess. I do not recommend these techniques to beginners you need to have your shit together before trying any of this. Where i dive the water is very cold so we try to minimize the deco as much as we can. If i would use software's at preset safety values and start the BT on the surface i would not get much diving done. A big draw back with dive computers are that they often are incredibly over conservative due to liability reasons. I have found almost all computers so conservative that they are completely useless. Huh? Varies by how much exactly Manos? What kind of dives could you possibly be talking about? > ( i still cannot figure it out how can you explore the unknown > with a bottom timer, being most of the time much higher than your max > depth > its a rocky multi level rock side here in the Greek Island of > Cyprus). Explore the unknown? You have to set a depth for a dive right? You have to select a gas before you dive right? Or are we talking recreational dives here? What kind of dives are you making exactly? > Thinking of purchasing a multi-gas underwater computer , i wanna her > some advice , brand , models from people with experience using them The best advice I can give you is to not buy into the computer hype. Learn decompression diving the right way and use BT with tables only. What level diver are you? I recommend finding some good instructor that can help you out here.
