Then at the moment, I don't accept the totality. I want to dive, and not have my dives turn out like some of the clusterfucks that I have had the misfortune to be involved with. Solo-diving has taught me navigation, self-responsibility, dive-planning, etcetera. A lot of good lessons, much faster than I could have learned them with a group around here. Solo diving has taught me more, faster than anything else I've tried. I'd love to dive with buddies, but I'm also obeying rule #1. I have some non-stroke buddies I'm going to start diving with soon, so I see the solo thing as a temporary stage that I was willing to risk, just for the moment. The fact that I choose to solo dive and accept the extra risks that entails (on Monterey beach dives - whee!) doesn't invalidate the DIR gear configuration. The more I focus on that, the more buddies I gradually convert. "So, Todd, why are you diving that TransPac II you hate so much anyway? Gee, my wing sure is comfortable..."
